Silence can be unpleasant. There are different reasons for silence and it is important to try and understand what the reasons might be so you know how to respond.
If you have asked the participants in your group a question and they don’t reply then they:
○ Might not have understood your question: can you phrase it in a different way? Can you use simpler language or words to explain what you mean?
○ Might not want to answer your question: is it a very sensitive issue, or something that is difficult to talk about?
○ Might be tired: has there been a lot of conversation in the group? Are people feeling tired of talking? Is it a topic they have discussed before and don’t want to talk about again?
